The custom-designed Monash Day Club for seniors was officially opened today by ACT Senior Australian of the Year, Professor Greg Tegart AM FTSE, amid a great day of entertainment and celebration.
Goodwin Day Clubs offer social supports in a lively hub for older Canberrans who may be suffering loneliness or isolation, and a new venue for the burgeoning seniors’ population in the Tuggeranong area.
“The Club is a hub of activity in light, modern surrounds including gardens and large communal dining and games areas,” said Sue Levy, Chief Executive Officer of Goodwin Aged Care Services who operate the club.
“This place has helped change my life,” said club member Ralph Shein.
“Before, I was just sitting in the house looking at four walls every day. Now I look forward to coming to Club, seeing friends and going on outings.”
“Social connection can significantly boost a person’s mental health and wellbeing – but many seniors become isolated as they become less mobile, lose loved ones, or are affected by health issues,” said Ms Levy. The Day Club service includes transport to and from home, group activities and outings, morning tea and a hot lunch.
The new club brings together services operating in rented premises at Gowrie, Farrer and other areas of Goodwin’s Monash village into one, permanent location. It adjoins Goodwin’s Monash village, named Best Retirement Living Development in Australia at the 2015 Property Council of Australia Innovation and Excellence Awards.
