Governor-General visits Goodwin resident

Goodwin Monash ILU resident Dorothy Ross received a special visit this morning from none other than His Excellency The Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, Sir Peter Cosgrove.

The Governor-General was visiting Dorothy to celebrate National Meals on Wheels Day in his role as Patron for the Meals on Wheels organisation.

Dorothy, 93, has been receiving Meals on Wheels for four years and says that it is a huge help.

“After cooking for 70 years for family and myself, it’s amazing how good it is to just open the fridge, pop it in the microwave and Bob’s your uncle!” Dorothy said with a laugh.

Dorothy was chuffed about spending some time with the His Excellency.

“It’s not every day the Governor-General comes to your house, it was quite an honour and I feel wonderful about it,” Dorothy said.

“We spoke about my family and friends and the activities I do here at Goodwin, which was very nice, he’s a lovely man.”

Meals on Wheels was founded in South Australia in 1953 and is a Red Cross initiative where volunteers bring meals to people who perhaps need a little bit of extra help, which also helps keep them connected to their community.

“As patron for the Red Cross and Meals on Wheels, I want to say thank you to all of the volunteers who come and deliver meals to those who need them,” Sir Peter said.

“And Dorothy, I want to leave by saying thank you for being such a lovely Australia.”

If you or a family member would like some help around the house, call Goodwin on 6175 5650.
