Celebrating the National Volunteer Week theme of “Something for Everyone,” a heartwarming generational bridge is coming to life at Goodwin.
Every weekend, the vibrant halls of Goodwin House in Ainslie brighten as 16-year-old student Sophia Malinao steps in to volunteer alongside Activities Coordinator, Gaki Zangmo.
Gaki, who hails from Bhutan, views our dedicated aged care volunteers as indispensable partners in reducing loneliness, noting the profound impact young people make on our community.
“When a young visitor enters, the atmosphere becomes brighter. Their energy encourages conversation, laughter, and participation,” says Gaki.
Guided by her Buddhist background of kindness and compassion, Gaki notes that this intergenerational connection is vital to creating an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued.
For Sophia, the inspiration to give back started at home. Her mother, Anne Malinao, is the Customer Liaison Officer at Goodwin House. Through early exposure to her mother’s professional world, Sophia witnessed the beautiful bond between residents and staff firsthand.
“I immediately wanted to be a part of such an incredible group,” Sophia shares. “Goodwin, especially, is a place that welcomes anyone with open arms. My mum has been the biggest supporter of Goodwin for years. Her love for it was so distinct, I started to feel it too.”
Assisting Gaki with Saturday bingo, Sophia has quickly become an essential thread in the social fabric of the home. Anne believes these youthful interactions bring irreplaceable vitality to the village.
“A young volunteer brings the freshness of youth,” Anne notes. “It brings out our residents’ playful inner child, especially during games. I am so glad that my daughter experiences the realities and complexities of life as we get older here at Goodwin, and that she does this with so much compassion.”
Ultimately, the rewards of volunteering at Goodwin flow both ways. Sophia, who aspires to be a doctor, has found immense personal fulfillment in her weekend role.
“I learned that regardless of age, everyone needs somewhere where they belong… we thrive best with loved ones around us,” Sophia concludes.
Through shared weekend activities, Gaki, Anne, and Sophia continue to demonstrate that at Goodwin House, belonging is what makes our community feel like family.

Volunteering isn’t just about giving your time; it’s about the unique energy, perspective, and joy you bring into the lives of others.
As Sophia’s story shows, these small weekend interactions build a powerful sense of belonging that benefits our residents and volunteers alike.
Whether you are looking to gain experience, stay active in retirement, or simply give back, your presence can truly brighten someone’s day. Our program offers incredibly flexible options tailored to your unique skills and interests.
