After years in the planning, Goodwin is proud to announce construction has commenced on Goodwin Village Downer with a ceremonial sod turn event to celebrate the first ground broken.
Future residents, Goodwin board of directors, Alicia Payne MP and distinguished guests gathered at the crossroads of Melba and Bradfield Street to mark the formal start of construction on the development.
The area was welcomed with a traditional smoking ceremony before CEO of construction company Manteena Mark Bauer and Goodwin Chair Liesel Wett turned the first soil.
‘This development has been a long time coming, with plans for Goodwin Village Downer initiated in 2015 as a means to address the need for more appropriate quality housing options for Canberra’s ageing population’ said Ms Wett.
‘Goodwin Village Downer will include contemporary architecture, spacious and low-maintenance apartments with plenty of shared areas and greenery throughout that will fit very well into the local neighbourhood.’
Goodwin thanks Manteena, CHC Australia, the Downer Community Association, CK Architecture, and future Downer residents for their contribution in getting us to this point. We are excited to see Goodwin Village Downer be home to a thriving community.
The site will comprise of four buildings with 109 independent living apartments and 20 assisted living apartments designed to support healthy ageing. Construction is expected to be completed in early 2026.
