The Honourable Margaret Reid AO
Goodwin is proud to have the patronage of Honourable Margaret Reid AO.
A noted parliamentarian, and national and community leader, Margaret was appointed Officer of the Order of Australia in 2004.
Born Margaret Elizabeth McLachlan at Crystal Brook in South Australia, Margaret Reid worked as a barrister and solicitor in Adelaide and Canberra. In 1981, she was elected as a Senator for the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), a position she held until she retired in 2003.
Margaret was Deputy President of the Senate and Chair of Committees in 1995. In August 1996. she became the first woman elected President of the Australian Senate, a position she held for six of the 22 years of her Senate service.
Margaret Reid remains the only woman to have held the position of President of the Australian Senate.
Establishing a relationship with Goodwin during her time as Senator, aged care has always been an important issue to Margaret. In 1994, she celebrated Goodwin’s 40th year, laying a time capsule under the pavers of Goodwin’s Ralph Cartwright Centre in Monash.
She remained strongly committed to leadership and service at a community level throughout her years in parliament. Her commitment continues following her retirement.
