For more than 60 years, our community-based, not-for-profit organisation has been providing the Canberra and regional communities with experience-driven independent living villages, reliable and innovative in-home care, and superior standard residential aged care facilities.

History

Our company has its roots in a meeting called by the National Council of Women in 1954, where these forward-thinking ladies proposed establishing a housing settlement for Canberra’s older people. Twelve community leaders formed a committee to pursue this ambitious idea, including the well-known political scholar Professor L.F. Crisp and the founding editor of the Canberra Times, A.T. Shakespeare. The group decided to call itself the Goodwin Centre Development Committee in honour of Lt Col John Goodwin, who was a renowned public servant and tireless advocate for the needs of the growing Canberra community.

Today Goodwin enjoys the support of many community partners, and is proudly supported by our patron, the Hon Margaret Reid AO.

Philosophy

Goodwin’s philosophy is on care and quality of life for all. This is evident in everything we do for our clients who range from ‘young’ active new-retirees looking for exciting lifestyle options, to those with high care, specialised needs. It manifests also in the detailed planning, construction and management of independent housing and live-in aged care, to ensure that our clients have the best possible quality of life.

And we are always striving to improve what we do through ongoing research partnerships and reviews towards better understanding our residents and clients; best-practice care services; and furthering our knowledge on up-to-date methodologies and technologies.
