Where do I start?

Goodwin offers two Australian Government funded home care programs that offer a range of services to help you stay at home; and we can provide services on a private, commercial basis.

The first step to getting home care is to contact our team on 02 6175 5650 or email us at community@goodwin.org.au, so that we can determine your needs, any supports you may eligible for, and help you through the application process.

The home care funding available to you, and under which program, will be determined by your care needs as assessed by an independent assessor. Your financial means may also be taken into account, and whether you receive the age pension. In addition to the funds the Government provides, you will be asked to pay a co-contribution if you can afford to do so. The amount you pay is related to your income. (For details on client contribution for services under the Commonwealth Home Support Programme, click here for Goodwin’s policy document. Home Care Packages funding information is available at the Government’s My Aged Care web portal.)

Goodwin can also provide services on a private, commercial basis.

It can get a little confusing for those new to the Australian home care system, so we recommend you talk to us at Goodwin first, and we can assist you through the whole process.

Note that there are changes to the national system for home care packages being implemented in February 2017. Click here for information, or call us to talk through it.

The basic steps to getting home care

1  Contact Goodwin

We’ll explain the Australian home care system and how to make it work for you, listen to your needs, and help you with the government process and forms to apply for funding for your care.

2  Get assessed

Because home care packages are government subsidised, the level of funding you get depends on an assessment by the government’s Aged Care Assessment Team (an ACAT assessment). It’s free and conducted in your home or hospital. Goodwin can help you arrange this.

3  Receive your letter of approval and go on the national wait list

You will receive a letter from My Aged Care (the government’s aged care portal) confirming if you are eligible for a home care package and to what level of care and funding. You will be placed on a national priority queue and be contacted when a suitable package becomes available to you. While you are waiting for approval, you can access Goodwin services on a private fee-for-service basis.

4  Reach the top of the queue and get your referral code

When your package is allocated to you, you will receive another letter from My Aged Care, with details of your home care package and your unique referral code.

5  Contact Goodwin and start receiving services

You will have 56 days to take up your package with your chosen care provider, from the date of the above letter. In this period, come back to Goodwin so we can get to work on your tailored care plan, ensure your care budget is working its best for you (see the case studies in this brochure for ideas!), and start delivering your services.

Not eligible for a government package? You can still get help.

If your letter from My Aged Care tells you you’re not eligible for home care package funding, you can still access home care services through Goodwin on a private fee-for-service basis, or through the alternate funding program for lower level care, the Commonwealth Home Support Programme. Ask us for details.
